Terracon Foundation Announces Grant to the Wake Forest High School, Construction Technology Career Academy
RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Terracon Foundation recently awarded a $3,000 community grant to the Wake Forest High School, Construction Technology Career Academy (CTCA) that will be used to help fund organization projects, field trips, and student scholarships.
Terracon Foundation community grants support local nonprofit programs that Terracon employees are actively involved with, in the communities where they live and work.
The guiding mission of the CTCA is to provide foundational knowledge and skills in construction and related fields (i.e. architecture, drafting, engineering, construction management, interior design, landscape design, and others). The group also prepares students to pursue post-secondary education upon high school graduation and to successfully compete in a challenging workforce.
Aaron Layne, P.E., office manager in the Terracon Raleigh office, applied for and presented the grant to CTCA. Darline Johnson, CTCA advisory board chair, accepted the grant and expressed her appreciation.
"Thank you Terracon for your help and support of the CTCA," said Johnson. "You make a difference."
The Terracon Foundation was established in 2008 and expanded considerably in 2012 to provide a broader range of grant opportunities. The Terracon Foundation also provides national partner grants, university grants, and employee dependent scholarships. During 2013, the foundation awarded grants of more than $375,000.

Terracon Foundation Announces Grant to Communities in Schools of San Antonio
SAN ANTONIO -- The Terracon Foundation recently awarded a $2,500 community grant to Communities in Schools of San Antonio (CIS-SA) that will be used to support essential operating expenses for the organization's dropout prevention program.
Terracon Foundation community grants support local nonprofit programs that Terracon employees are actively involved with, in the communities where they live and work.
CIS-SA keeps kids in school by unlocking their potential to succeed. The mission of the organization is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. CIS-SA provides comprehensive case management services to approximately 7,000 students on 74 campuses in nine districts throughout Bexar County.
Patty Vinton, corporate services representative and administrative manager in the Terracon Laredo office, applied for and presented the grant to CIS-SA. Dejah Behnke, director of resource development and Rufus Samkin, chief executive officer for CIS-SA, accepted the grant.
"We greatly appreciate the Terracon Foundation's continued support of our program," Samkin said. "Thank you for giving back to the community and helping us keep kids in school!"

Terracon Foundation Announces Grant to Bonner Springs Elementary School
BONNER SPRINGS, Kan. -- The Terracon Foundation recently awarded a $2,500 community grant to Bonner Springs Elementary School that will be used to improve the school's Outdoor Learning Area for future teaching opportunities, performances, and community meetings.
Terracon Foundation community grants support local nonprofit programs that Terracon employees are actively involved with, in the communities where they live and work.
Bonner Springs Elementary provides education to more than 450 students from grades pre-kindergarten to fifth grade. The mission of the school is to provide a safe and positive educational environment that promotes learning, literacy, technology, and respect for children and their community.
Cherie Raygoza, employee development and wellbeing specialist in the Terracon corporate office in Olathe, is involved with the school and presented the grant. Kim Mitchell, principal of Bonner Springs Elementary, accepted the grant and explained more about its use.
"Our Outdoor Learning Area came about as part of our wellness initiative," Mitchell said. "We are now at the point where we are planning our seating and landscaping. Our goal is to hold a ribbon cutting ceremony in May 2014."
In addition to the Terracon Foundation grant, Mitchell added that the project was a team effort between a school counselors, teachers, instructors at Kansas State University, and Lowe's to build an area that would meet all of the school's needs. Terracon employee, Raygoza emphasized the importance of the school to her family and the community.
"Bonner Springs Elementary is not just a school, it is a part of my family's history and future," Raygoza said. "The school is important to the growth and development of our children and it is our responsibility to help provide the resources to make them successful."

Barrera Joins as Terracon's Laredo Office Manager
LAREDO, Texas --- Arturo R. Barrera, Jr., P.E., PMP,has joined Terracon as office manager of Terracon's Laredo office. He will be responsible for supervising all services in Terracon's Laredo region.
Barrera has more than 30 years of domestic and international FFP, CPAF, and CR private and government engineering, procurement, and construction project management experience. His experience also includes client service, project controls scheduling, project costs and reporting, permitting and leasing, and risk management.
Barrera is a registered professional engineer in Texas. He is also a certified project management professional. He earned a Master of Arts in management from Webster University. Barrera holds a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from Texas A&M.
