Terracon Boosts West Coast Presence with Purchase of California’s CHJ Consultants

December 06, 2016

OLATHE, Kan. – Terracon, a leading provider of environmental, facilities, geotechnical, and materials services, announces the acquisition of CHJ Consultants (CHJ). CHJ provides geotechnical and materials testing services from its three southern California locations.

“We are pleased to further demonstrate our commitment to growing our presence, expertise, and service offerings in southern California and throughout the West,” said David Gaboury, P.E., president and CEO of Terracon. “CHJ’s depth of expertise allows us to expand our regional presence and bring additional resources to national and local clients.”

CHJ Consultants was founded in 2011 by Robert Johnson along with Jay Martin and help from a former business associate. From its headquarters and laboratory in Colton, and with a laboratory in Victorville and an office in Palm Desert, Calif., CHJ supports projects throughout the San Bernardino, Riverside, Los Angeles, and Orange Counties. CHJ’s services include geotechnical investigations, soil testing, engineering geology, environmental consulting, materials testing, and construction inspection.

The transition is effective immediately. The company operates as CHJ Consultants, A Terracon Company. All 55 CHJ employees have been retained.

President and principal geotechnical engineer of CHJ, Robert Johnson, P.E., G.E., said, “We believe this is a unique opportunity for CHJ employees and our clients. We could not be more excited to join a national company committed to the success of its employee-owners. The merger brings us the added resources that will allow us to focus on bringing greater value to our clients.”

CHJ has a professional staff which includes geotechnical and civil engineers, geologists, materials technicians, and inspectors. The CHJ portfolio includes a number of major hospitals, roadways, schools and universities, power projects, and flood control projects.

The new acquisition is supported by Terracon’s existing Orange County office. The CHJ acquisition is Terracon’s fifth of 2016. Over the past two years Terracon’s western expansions have included NORCAL of Sonoma County, Calif., and Mayes Testing Engineers and Argus Pacific, both of Seattle.
